Help, my hair is thinning and I need volume!
This article was published for the first time in March 2012 in the West End Times.
“No please don’t do it, don’t offer me another hair loss product!”
Are you in this position? Have you tried every single hair loss product on the market? Yet you still find yourself in the exact same position except that you have lost hundreds of dollars on these products. There are other options out there and they don’t entail putting any chemicals on your hair. We call this solution a volumizer or hair topper. I will speak about the hair toppers, who wear them and the techniques that are used to install and integrate them to your hair.
We call it a volumizer or hair topper when it is for women and it is also known as a toupee when it is made for a man. This is an amazing way to cover thinning hair. You may be wondering what this is, what is this miracle product that will instantly give me gorgeous thicker hair. Well, let me tell you all about it. First of all, a hair topper is a thin base that replicates a scalp that we injected hair into it. These hair toppers are made to replace the hair that has fallen out of your own head. These pieces are miraculous to those who have lost their self-image to hair loss.
So you might be wondering who wear these Hair Toppers. My answer is more people then you can possibly imagine. Thousands of people in Montreal alone are walking around with these pieces on their heads and you probably haven’t even noticed. So you wonder why some women you know have luscious locks and you have barely enough hair to make a ponytail… Actors and actresses are known for their beautiful hair; well the odds are they are wearing a volumizer / hair topper.
How do you order a volumizer / hair topper? We usually make sure of the exact size needed to cover the thinning area, the color of the hair, the texture and the length needed for it to look as natural as possible. When properly made, you can trick almost anyone, even your closest family members. So now you must be wondering how this piece stays on your head without it flying off with the wind. Well that is where the installation of the piece becomes important. The piece will be installed depending on your needs.
- Clip in method – This method entails that the user of the piece takes it on and off as desired. This method is great for the hands on person, who wants to control their hair piece. It is also better for those who want to use it on occasion only, weekends, suppers, parties, etc…
- Glue on method – This method is great for someone who has almost no hair left on the top of the crown. Caution: do not use this method if you have enough hair on the top of your head. The reason is that many companies that aren’t trained properly will try to encourage the glue on method which entails in most cases to shave the top of the head even when there is another alternative. When gluing is necessary, it can last between 4-6 weeks for super bonding. Many men however prefer the daily bonding where they can use a special tape and remove it as necessary.
- Tube in method – This method when done properly doesn’t entail any glue. When done by a trained professional, it can last up to 6 weeks on your head. This is personally my favorite method since everyone that does this method loves it and never wants any other methods.
What is great about a Hair Topper? You can do almost everything with it when it is properly installed. This includes putting ponytails, swimming, doing beautiful hair styles and up do’s. You will also notice that it is lightweight and comfortable. What is also great about them is that they add volume (to your liking) by replacing the hair that you have lost or to give you the hair you always wished you had.
